hi boys and girls we're going to talk about I need a game or an activity you can do with fractions and it's called racetrack fractions for this game you can have a game board that looks something like this this for you to print off if you can't print it off then you can easily draw it you also need to dice some chips and I do not have all of my chips so I'm having to use button sitting on a sentence find another one anyway so the object of the game is to get from 0 to 1 whole and so you'll put a marker or chip you can use Goldfish crackers you can use like I'm using another one here so that's what the game is to move down I have a sheet of paper here this is numerator denominator you do not have to have that I'm just using that spent trying to help us keep track of little bit so this is a game that is from creative mathematics this is where I first saw it so I thought I would be prey Sherwood beer get started. Do you want to talk about this game will talk about decomposition and you've talked about decomposition in your classrooms let's say for example if I had the number 5 I can take him * 5 into 1 and 4 I could take him post 5 into 2 and 3 and their many other way so I could also teach fractions are no different you can take him home fractions as well until we're going to be doing some of that today are some of that with this game right to the first thing I'm going to do is roll my dye release for this game your greatest number largest I are your greatest died when someone the Bottom insert a nominator and your smallest are your least number will go with the top of your numerator in a fraction always work that way you can have mixed fractions can have improper fractions but right now we're just going to work with this so I have 4/5 well obviously I could easily move this Marker 1 V 2 V 3 to 4 steps now I have two thirds so I can move this marker 1/3 cheeser 4/5 well can I move another fourth is no I really can't I only have one V left and I really don't have any way of decomposing my 4th 5th except by 1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5 so that's why I still don't have enough to do that and I don't have any other way to use another fraction to make that so what is my turn on that one so I have 1/6 I can meet this marker here I can I have 3/5 I really love these Fest so where did I lose my turn on that one here I have one fifth so I have made it all the way to the end zone that one which makes one hole I don't have a place on making board to do that so I don't lose that turn all right again I have 1/2 now I know that I can block him just go ahead and move that very easily to there and here I have another one sixth so I can move another 1/6 even though I'm at 26 now because I only make it one more step 4/5 I'm already there so lose my turn okay let's just say we're going to kind of a skip ahead in our game a little bit and let's say we're going to move things around I have a third and I can't what am I next I will have this down here before sandwich that we've already moved down here all right and let's say that we're old again and that we had here I'm sorry I'm going to have this over here that we have rolled 2/3 all right so I know oh my 2/3 that I can can I have one third right here right so on 2/3 I can move this as a 1/3 jump so that's one-third but I still need another third What if I at my game board here you'll notice that a bit 1626 is the same as 1/3 so if I have my marker here I can use this one to move another third by moving to 61626 so that gives me here's one third and then I did another 1/3 move from here to here so that will help you work with sometimes decomposing some of these fraction I'm thinking of fractions as equivalent as well I hope you enjoy this game this is a game you can play by yourself it's also fun to play against someone and see who can get all of them markers down to the Whitehall the fastest
